Christmas is an internationally popular annual festival celebrating the birth of Jesus, normally observed mostly on December 25th as an important religious and social occasion by billions of people from around the globe. Although most people celebrate Christmas in their own countries, it is now being observed by many people outside the Christian communities, primarily in non-religious nations.
Different Types of Celebrations
A number of European countries celebrate Christmas differently. For example, in Belgium, where Christmas is traditionally a festival of lights, it is celebrated with thirteen days of festivities. During this period, it is usual for visitors from all parts of Europe to visit the Churches and Cathedrals to see their favorite decorations like prelit Christmas trees. Along with this, many non-Christians alike visit Belgium to witness the atmosphere of joyous celebrations.
England is another country that has a very diverse tradition of what Christmas is all about. On the one hand, England traditionally celebrates Christmas with bonfires and holly leaves. On the other hand, the country of England also has another celebration called Epiphany, which is completely different from what America celebrates as Christmas. When the Irish fled to America during the mid-tenth century, they brought their celebrations with them and eventually, it turned into what we know as Epiphany. Both celebrations have their roots back in Ireland.
Ireland celebrates Christmas with great feasts and great parties. On the 25th of December, all the high priests and bishops of the Emerald Isle hold a massive meeting to confirm the celebration of Christmas in Ireland. Throughout this entire month, every town, village, house and establishment within Ireland hold a variety of parties and celebrations to honor the blessed event.
Throughout the country, people decorate their homes with prelit Christmas trees and give away gifts to all the people they know and love. Children go from door to door throughout the month of December to collect presents and food for their loved ones.
Many countries around the world also have very unique traditions when it comes to Christmas. However, in the modern era, many cities throughout the United States celebrate Christmas differently. People decorate their homes with prelit Christmas trees and throw parties, while others quietly exchange presents and food for family and friends. Which traditions do you have?
